Masterclass review

Myriam delivered an outstanding half-day training session for our audiologists at Hearing Savers, focusing on the latest assessment and treatment approaches for clients with tinnitus. Her engaging, hands-on style provided our team with  practical tools that we were able to implement immediately into clinical practice. The training was both inspiring and highly relevant.  I wholeheartedly recommend Myriam to hearing care professionals who are looking to learn and or refresh their skills in this specialised area to achieve the best possible outcomes for clients with tinnitus.

HEARING SAVERS

The world needs more people like Myriam! I'm a 22 year old musician who had spent countless amounts of money on ENT's, GP's and more importantly, a huge amount of time of worrying and googling trying to find and answer to my seemingly undiagnosable problem with my left ear.  After less than a week of implementing the strategies and education provided by Myriam I am getting better day by day.  TTS is such a strange and at times scary condition, but Myriam does an incredibly thorough job of explaining its mechanisms and the mind/body connection.

I honestly could not recommend her more.

I saw Myriam in regards to my tinnitus, she was extremely informative and very kind and caring and I cannot fault her approach in any way, in fact I can only speak very highly of her. I walked away from the clinic with a better understanding nevertheless quite overwhelmed at was to come, after a few months I'd felt my threat response had calmed down and to up until the 12 months although I could still hear my tinnitus it wasn't as overbearing, unfortunately out of the blue, my tinnitus has spiked up again, I reached out to Myriam and she has once again proven to be extremely kind and compassionate and has been extremely reassuring and has gone that extra mile to help me. Thank you so much.

Myriam was like no other specialist I had dealt with previously.  She explained things thoroughly and used visual representations so as to reinforce these learnings.  Hearing issues can be incredibly debilitating but I left the appointment with strategies and a clear understanding of what I was facing. Most importantly she showed a great deal of compassion and her expertise made me feel confident of my pathway to wellness.

I'm so glad I chose Myriam Westcott for a second opinion on some hearing tests that I had had done.  I had previously had the unfortunate experience of having some very questionable interpretation of the tests, which I had after having developed tinitus and then hyperacusis earlier this year.  The misdiagnosis I received I consider to be a traumatic event in my life.  Had I known about Myriam when I first developed tinitus, a session with her would have reassured me immediately and saved me from a pretty traumatic few months getting to the bottom of what was going on with me.

Myriam took a lot of care in listening to me and understanding my history thoroughly.  She takes much time and care in explaining in thorough detail the way in which the ear and brain work together, with a particular emphasis in my case, on the science behind how trauma can cause and exacerbate symptoms such as hyperacusis and tensor tympani syndrome. She is not only a leading expert in this field of audiology and neuroscience, she is also an expert at supporting people therapeutically who experience these symptoms. An unusual and much needed combination - you will be in good hands!

Quite simply the best consultation I've ever had with a medical professional about anything ever. Myriam Westcott spent a long time with me forensically building up a theory of what had went wrong with my hearing, and gave me the knowledge necessary to address it. Highly recommended.

"I think you would be quite interested in my hyperacusis progress.  In short, it is 99.99% diminished, gone, cured. I am reluctant to say 100% but I'm not sure why because I never notice it any more and haven't for a while now.  It's difficult to pin point exactly when I got to this stage but I know exactly when the turning point was.  It was on monday January the 5th when I spoke to you on the phone for nearly an hour.  While our appointment was somewhat beneficial, it was largely about me giving you information and explaining my symptoms etc.  But once I read through all the information you gave me and worked out exactly what I needed to know and then spoke to you about those concerns, that was when I started making progress.  In fact the very next day I vacuumed the floor with no trouble at all. (and no earplugs at all!!)  Only a couple of weeks before I couldn't even be in the house while my husband vacuumed the floor let alone doing it myself!! I still noticed the hyperacusis for some weeks after that day, but not as much.

At the end of January I found a job in child care.  It was 20 hours a week and seemed perfect, my only concern was how noisy it was there.  When I went and had my interview I found it very loud and had great reservations about whether I would cope.  The job was between 3 and 5 hours a day and I decided to bite the bullet and take the job.  I really believed that my hyperacusis would only improve in such an environment every day as compared to being at home alone and thinking about it.

For the first couple of weeks I did find the child care centre very loud but not uncomfortably so.  The job itself is so full on for the whole time I am there that I guess I just stopped thinking about it after that (I would say 1 - 2 weeks).  Now it is still loud but not hyperacusis loud, just normal person loud.  As you know, I was still doing things like going to cafes and shopping centers that I found extremely loud throughout my hyperacusis.  I just refused from the beginning to be a hermit and stop living and doing normal person things.  I would walk in and think "is it still loud in here today?" and feel let down when it was.  After a while I stopped doing that, I would go home and think "Oh, I forgot to listen to if it was noisy".  Every time I went to the supermarket, shopping center, or a cafe I would forget to listen and then I realized that was the whole point.  Not noticing was me getting better!!  I mean, if it was that bad (loud) surely I would have noticed it without having to think about it?!

I wanted to tell you all of this for a few reasons.  Firstly because you had such a huge part in me not having hyperacusis any more and because you must wonder what happens to your patients once they get better and you never hear from them again!!  Secondly, I would love to help other people who have it.  Finally, I wanted to tell you this story because I think I have beat this in a lot less time that the norm which, if nothing else, I think you could tell your patients.  I know you don't like to give a time frame but giving them hope is so important in their recovery.

Thank you again for everything."
